Carpentry has had a long history since the predecessor of Yilan Prison. In order to develop more skillful carpenters, the woodworking classes were opened in April 1993 to help the prisoners to fully utilize the skills they have learned. It also aims to help the inmates obtain practical skills to make a living when they return to the society. After the trainees complete the initial course, they will then participate in wood processing and decoration courses along with working with the Environmental Protection Bureau of Yilan County to restore furnitures. Moreover, Yilan Prison encourages trainees to work on the lanterns and the paper clay classes to produce and sell innovative products, aiming to apply what they have learned and achieve the goal of “One Prison, One Characteristic”.
